Microsoft Copilot is a suite of generative AI services from Microsoft. Cal State LA's licensing grants limited access to several services and requires additional licensing for others. Microsoft continues to integrate generative AI tools into its products and leverages the Copilot branding. Below is a list of Microsoft AI services branded under the Copilot name. Because of our Microsoft licenses, some of the services are already available to the Cal State LA community. In addition, Microsoft Azure AI services provide additional services for developers.

Microsoft Copilot (formerly Bing Chat Enterprise)
Microsoft Copilot is available on the web as well as integrated in newer versions of Windows, Microsoft Edge web browser, and mobile applications.
Cal State LA's Microsoft 365 A3 licensing extends commercial data protection to faculty, staff, and student MyCalStateLA IDs. Commercial data protection means that data is protected, chat data is not saved, Microsoft has no eyes-on, access to it, and it is not used to train foundation models.
You must ensure you are logged in to Copilot with your MyCalStateLA ID to ensure commercial data protection is active.
Copilot for Microsoft 365
Copilot for Microsoft 365 is a set of tools integrated into Microsoft Office 365 applications, including desktop and web versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.
Cal State LA is not licensed for Copilot for Microsoft 365.
The license cost for Copilot for M365 is $360 per user per year as of February 2024.
GitHub Copilot
GitHub Copilot is an integrated tool to assist with coding. GitHub Copilot licensing is not included as part of Cal State LA's licensing. However, GitHub Copilot is available under GitHub's education benefits. Faculty and students can directly request access to Copilot:
- Complete the Student or Educator Benefit Application
- Wait until the application is verified
- Sign-up for GitHub Copilot
- Copilot Individual plan should be free for verified accounts

Microsoft Security Copilot
Security Copilot is an AI cybersecurity product that enables security professionals to respond to cyber threats quickly and assess risk exposure in minutes.
Microsoft Security Copilot will integrate with other Microsoft tools such as Microsoft Defender XDR, Microsoft Sentinel, Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Entra, Microsoft Purview, Microsoft Defender for Cloud, and Microsoft Defender for External Attack Surface Management.
Currently, it is only available by invitation to the early access program.
Cal State LA is not licensed to the Microsoft Security Copilot.
Microsoft Copilot Studio
Copilot Studio offers a graphical development environment to build copilots using generative AI, sophisticated dialog creation, plugin capabilities, process automation, and built-in analytics that work with Microsoft conversational AI tools.
Cal State LA is not licensed for Microsoft Copilot Studio.
Pricing is $200.00 per month for 25,000 messages as of February 2024.
Microsoft Azure AI Services
Microsoft Azure AI Services is a suite of Azure services intended for professional software developers, including cloud architects and technical decision-makers who want to create custom generative AI applications.
Microsoft Azure AI services are available for a fee under a cost recovery model for faculty and staff. Not available to students.
Pricing starts at ~$100 per month.
