At The Crossroads of Civilizations: The Cultures of West Mexico through Time.
A Symposium in Homage to John M.D. Pohl and Manuel Aguilar-Moreno
March 22, 2025
Cal State Los Angeles (Student Union Theater)
West Mexico has been one of the most understudied and enigmatic of the major civilizational developments in the Americas and yet many scholars believe that the region holds significant clues to answering long contentious questions on how its diverse Pre-Columbian societies had become socially and economically integrated. Our conference presents a compelling new perspective through the recognition of cultural continuity across West Mexico over the two millennia by clearly demonstrating that those responsible were the direct ancestors of the diversity of Indigenous peoples, including the Cora, Huichol, and Tepehuan among others, who continue to reside across the region today. These remaining indigenous peoples in the states of Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, and Colima present us with an unprecedented study situation in that many of these populations were successful in preserving their languages, customs, beliefs, territorial narratives, and long-distance communication routes that can be directly applied to the reconstruction of their Pre-Columbian world in ways that are impracticable for other parts of Mesoamerica.
This event is organized by California State University, Los Angeles, the Art History Society, and the Anthropology Film Club of CSULA. It is made possible in part with the generous support of the Getty Research Institute and the Arvey Foundation.
